There is also a restaurant area down a couple of steps from the bar area. The conservatory is on the same level and families are welcome there at all times. Inside there is a bar area with bare boards and flag stones round the bar, wood panelled walls, an open fire and some sofas as well as chairs. Outside is a lovely garden attractively set by the banks of the Tillingbourne with the main parking over a bridge. The pub presents a stylish and comfortable environment in which to enjoy the excellent food and drink on offer. This 19th century pub used to be owned by the Duke of Northumberland, and until 1910 had its own brewery when it was taken over by the Surrey Trust Company. They are part of Brit Stops which means that one or two campervans can park in the back parking area if it has been booked in advance. There is a separate baby change room next to the ladies. Selected sport, such as rugby, is shown on terrestrial TV. Dogs are welcome and free Wi-Fi is available. If the weather is good in the summer there may be BBQs on Saturdays and there are some games for the garden behind the bar. The pub was a former Surrey Trust Company house. Good food is a feature with a varied menu on offer, with the kitchen all day. Throughout there are wooden beams and posts, solid antique furniture, and walls displaying interesting prints. The lowest part of the bar has large flagstones on the floor, with the next and the top area, which is mainly used as overflow during busy periods or for functions, having bare boards. The pub interior rambles over three levels served from a beautiful English Oak bar. This highly attractive 17th century inn can be found opposite the church. 12/9/2023 0 Comments Woodpecker typesLesser spotted woodpeckers are fed primarily on a variety of insects, whilst green woodpeckers are particularly fond of ants extracted from their lair by the parent's unusually long tongue. Whilst in the nest, the young attract attention with increasingly raucous calls as siblings compete for every morsel brought back by frenzied parents. In all three species, both sexes incubate for around two weeks, and the youngsters fledge after another three weeks. And as nature has decreed for many hole-nesting birds, the eggs when first laid are pure white - there is little need for anti-predator camouflage, whilst white eggs are more likely to be noticed by potentially clumsy parents. Around six or seven eggs are laid onto, at best, a scant bed of wood chippings. As spring progresses, drumming frequency and intensity reduce as pairs settle down to raise a family.Īll New Forest woodpeckers are hole-nesters that excavate their own cavities. The drumbeats of great spotted woodpeckers and lesser spotted woodpeckers are also quite similar, although those of the latter are more prolonged, higher pitched, considerably softer and not so far-carrying.Ĭonfusion can arise, however, even amongst the woodpeckers, for sometimes drumming by one species stimulates activity in the other, leading to somewhat one-side competition. Somewhat confusingly, however, Great Spotted Woodpeckers use calls similar to the last two mentioned, albeit at higher volume. They do, though, sometimes draw attention to themselves with a piping pee-pee-pee call that is used year-round an agitated, rattling, almost mistle thrush-like alarm call and a soft, single call best written as chik. Great spotted woodpeckers and green woodpeckers can be seen quite often, but lesser spotted woodpeckers are more elusive, for the most part remaining out of sight in the tree tops. Stiffened, pointed tail feathers serve as a prop to aid stability as the woodpeckers clamber up trunks and along boughs, but, unlike nuthatches, they have great difficulty in travelling downwards, and can very occasionally be seen attempting the manoeuvre in a series of awkward, ungainly backward hops. To help grip vertical surfaces, woodpeckers are specially equipped with strong, muscular legs long, incredibly sharp claws and, most unusually, two backward and two forward facing toes on each foot. Also known as the rain-bird, it used to be said that green woodpeckers were more inclined to call before impending rain, but more likely, the sound simply carries further in the atmospheric conditions immediately before rainfall. Unmistakable greeny-yellow, it has a contrasting crimson crown and dark moustache, and, rather than drum, it has an unmistakable, loud, far-carrying, raucous laughing cry that gave it its country name - the yaffle. The green woodpecker is the largest of the three. Great spotted woodpeckers are blackbird-sized and have a broad white shoulder patch, whilst lesser spotted woodpeckers are sparrow-sized and have white horizontal barring to back and wings, a characteristic reflected in their country name - the barred woodpecker. Once fittingly known as pied woodpeckers, great spotted woodpeckers and lesser spotted woodpeckers are, predictably, black and white interspersed with variable patches of scarlet, depending on whether male, female or juvenile. Great spotted woodpeckers and lesser spotted woodpeckers are primarily woodland birds that drum quite a lot from late-winter through to mid- or late-spring, whilst green woodpeckers prefer more open places with scattered trees, and hardly drum at all. 12/9/2023 0 Comments Keybase stellar lumensSCP, with its four key properties - decentralized control, flexible trust, low latency and asymptotic security - ensures that transactions are processed cheaply and within a matter of seconds. We can also scroll to the left and to the right to see other things, like popular news websites or mail agents. Our journey begins with the main window of Coast, where we can see preset bookmarks that include YouTube, Google+, Digg, and some more useful stuff. Be sure to skip it if you don't want any spoilers (yeap, that is a spoiler alert!). Now, for those of you who are still reluctant to give Coast a go, I'm about to describe its main features in the very next paragraph. Also, the Coast team sprinkled a few very catchy animations to accompany your gestures as you navigate around pages and bookmarks. It is so extremely effortless to catch on, and I think the trick to that is the shameless exploitation of the iPad's touch mechanics. I encourage you to do the same, you will not regret it. I actually had a chance to play with Coast just as it came out, without any clue on how one should use it. With Coast, you won't ever see the conventional address bar or your bookmarks sitting at the top of the page wherever you go no, you will be enjoying the Web in full screen. And now we can finally see and enjoy what the team has come up with. That last concept alone made the whole idea worth implementing, since it sounds like a more intuitive, even on the surface, approach to Intertnet surfing. This made Huib Kleinhout, the project leader of Coast, wonder why that's how it is and finding no answer, he felt like it was time to change things a bit and asked for a team to develop a new browser, something that would reinvent the tablet browsers and replace the usual PC-like design language and interfaces, instead displaying pages as applications. Up to now, tablet web browsers have been basically the very same browsers we use on the PC, allowing for a few quirks of tablet designs. The Norwegian team behind the well-known and respected by many Opera browser recently came out with a pleasant surprise for tablet owners: they announced a whole new product, a web browser called Coast, designed specifically for the iPad. Simple and intuitive, it’s major problem is going to be changing people’s attitudes to browsing.Coast: a new browser for tablets by Opera Verdict:Ĭoast by Opera offers an intriguing glimpse into one possible future of web browsing on a tablet. Bringing music to life: tiles with music or video playing come to life, and you can easily control your favorite music sites from the lock screen. Quickly open PDFs in other apps such as iBooks, your default PDF reader or Dropbox Fast back: going back is now instant in many cases Easy wallpaper customization: just long press on the home screen to choose a new wallpaper or an image from your photo roll It will be interesting to see if it becomes a success. There’s also the question of whether there’s a demand for such a revolution in web browsing, but at least Coast has the benefit of being incredibly simple to pick up and use. Early indications are that performance isn’t quite on a par with Safari, while others are looking for more privacy controls (mainly an option to wipe all cached data) as well as the ability to transfer bookmarks and other settings from other browsers. Unlike Opera’s other iOS browser, Opera Mini, Coast utilises the WebKit browser engine used by Safari. Tap this and they’ll appear as thumbnails, with two further buttons to investigate: the ‘I’ button provides a safety rating for the site (Coast will also provide a more visible alert for sites it deems as unsafe), while the Share button lets you tweet, Facebook, Message, email or print the page, plus add it to your home screen as a favourite. Recent sites are also accessible via a button in the bottom right-hand corner. This is also where you’ll find the unified Address and Search bar for locating more content. The aim of Coast is to minimise the user interface, so only two buttons are ever-present on screen: a Home button that takes you to a home screen similar to the iOS home screen, with favourite and recently visited sites represent by icons, nine to a screen (swipe left to reveal more). So out go the browser toolbars and in come navigation by swiping left to go back and right to go forwards. Now Norwegian browser developer Opera has decided to see if it’s able to reinvent browsing on the iPad with this brand new browser.įire up Coast for the first time and an instructional video briefly reveals how the app works – by touch and swipe wherever possible. While Safari works fine on the iPad, it’s still a little clunky because it’s practically identical to using a browser on your desktop or laptop. No one has really cracked browsing on a touchscreen. Foldvary-Schaefer expects that LXB, taken as a liquid in two separate doses at night, will replace the higher-sodium formulation because it is safer to use over the long term. However, because of its high sodium content, SXB may increase the risk for hypertension and could impact disorders such as obesity and diabetes, which are common comorbidities in patients with narcolepsy.ĭr. “Sodium oxybate has been designated as a standard of care for narcolepsy by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine,” she continues, “and it has been proven effective in managing these symptoms.” The drug is scheduled at a lower level than traditional stimulants such as amphetamines, which can have cardiovascular effects. “Patients need to be on medications for life to manage symptoms that impair QOL, productivity and social functioning,” Dr. Associated cataplexy, or sudden muscle weakening, affects about 70% of people with narcolepsy and typically presents in the teens or 20s. “Further, most patients have persistent symptoms despite optimized medical therapy.”Īlthough onset typically occurs in the second or third decade of life, a 13-year average delay in diagnosis means that clinicians may see patients with seemingly new-onset narcolepsy in their 40s and beyond. “Narcolepsy is a neurologic disorder affecting approximately 1 in 2,000 people in the U.S., and we believe it is grossly underdiagnosed,” says Dr. Patients were then randomized to receive placebo or LXB for a two-week randomized, double-blind withdrawal phase to assess QOL. The trial first ran for 12 weeks in an open-label, optimized treatment-and-titration phase, and then for two weeks in a stable-dose phase. The study mimicked real-world conditions in that patients who were taking traditional SXB were transitioned to the lower-sodium formulation, with the dose titrated based on efficacy and tolerability. The platform presentation was a follow-up to the recent publication in Sleep of primary efficacy and safety results of a phase 3 multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind withdrawal study of LXB in 134 adults with narcolepsy with cataplexy. QOL was measured with the 36-item Short Form Health Survey Version 2 (SF-36) and the 5-level EuroQol 5-Dimensions Self-Report Questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L). Foldvary-Schaefer, Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Sleep Disorders Center. “Quality of life worsened among patients randomized to placebo during a two-week withdrawal period, but it remained stable in participants who continued LXB treatment,” says Dr. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services Policy Advertising on our site helps support our mission. The first one is set in the 1980s and will focus on a group of friends known as the "Losers Club" who band together to battle a terrifying monster who is killing children in Derry, Maine. There are two films being developed to tell this incredible story. The clown is the manifestation of children’s imaginations, so there’s something child-like about that.” There’s a childishness to the character, because he’s so closely linked to the kids. What’s funny to this evil entity might not be funny to everyone else. I’m playing just one of the beings It creates…It truly enjoys the shape of the clown Pennywise, and enjoys the game and the hunt. It’s beyond even a sociopath, because he’s not even human. When previously talking about the character, Skarsgård said: “It’s such an extreme character. The real test will be seeing him in action. It's explained that this version of the character was designed to "camouflage himself and strike rather than lure children with lively plumage." I really like the design of the character and the direction they took it. But there are accents to pull out the definition of the gray silk.” It’s almost like Pennywise fades into his environment. It gives the character a child-like quality.”ĮW says that every part of the costume is "meant to suggest something both ancient and disturbed." When talking about the colors of the costume, Bryant says: “The pompoms are orange, and then with the trim around the cuffs and the ankles, it’s basically a ball fringe that’s a combination of orange, red, and cinnamon. The pants being short, the high waistline of the jacket, and the fit of the costume is a very important element. It’s not a direct translation of a ruff or a whisk, which were two of the collars popular during the Elizabethan period.” "There is almost a doll-like quality to the costume. It has a whimsical, floppy quality to it. It’s a different technique than what the Elizabethans would do. “That pleating is actually Fortuny pleating, which gives it almost a crepe-like effect. He is definitely a clown from a different time. Yes.The costume design comes from costume designer Janie Bryant ( Deadwood, Mad Men) who talked to EW about the design of the outfit saying: “The costume definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will.
